It’s a refreshing and nuanced take on the "enemies-to-friends-to-lovers" trope. The story follows two "tough," initially straight men who fall for each other but struggle to express their feelings due to societal pressures. While they care deeply for one another, there are many understandable reasons keeping them apart.I can’t begin to imagine how difficult it must be to go through this, especially in the 1990s when homosexuality was stigmatized and even considered a disease. The setting just added to the emotional weight of the characters’ journey, making their conflicts feel both heartbreaking and deeply authentic. This book truly put me through an emotional rollercoaster. the slow build-up and aching pining to the heartfelt confession, raw angst, and unwavering, unconditional love, every aspect of the story was beautifully crafted. The love between the MC and ML is so profound that it left me at a loss for words.it was simply beautiful. On top of that, the smut scenes are incredibly intense, sometimes i would need to pause for a minute to just breathe. 😭🥹While anyone can write about obsession or lust, it takes real skill, experience, and creativity to craft a story that conveys such deep, soul-stirring love. This book accomplished that beautifully, and its impact will stay with me for a long time.angst bl danmei ...more12 likes2 commentsLike CommentStacie314 reviews20 followersFollowFollowSeptember 24, 2025I did not expect a danmei about two young gangsters to have an absolute chokehold on me. This was supposed to be the novel I listened to on my commute but I simply could not stop reading it so all other books were put on hold. Sa Ye vibes but grittier and MUCH spicier. I would recommend skipping reading the tags unless you want a mild spoiler (I’ll list at the end). ✔️Rival gangs, fights, mafia/organized crime type stuff (can get gory and bloody at times but I’m a wimp for that stuff and I was fine)✔️ Older teens/early 20’s (not HS) but they feel grown up because of life experiences✔️ Time period where being gay is considered a mental issue/disease, mocked, unacceptable, etc- so expect lots of pain, heartache, confusion, fear, panic, denial, etc✔️ One of the most realistic, sweetest, heart wrenching, uncensored, emotion-filled relationships I’ve read in modern danmei. This is the kind of love that is so beautiful and raw and transcends everything but the path to get there is agonizing✔️ Appreciated how quickly the misleading miscommunication was resolved ✔️Angst and more angst but so much sweetness and spice too✔️SPICY 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ *This novel will be published by Rosmei and titled Gold Class Enforcers. Unsure of the # of volumes but the main story ends on chapter 115. It’s available on Chrysanthemum Gardens.I experienced a lot of fear and worry for the characters while reading this book mostly because of 1) the nature of a book about gangsters 😂 and 2) the emotional trauma that is experienced by being gay during the time period this took place -late 80’s/early 90’s I think? There is not a ton of outward homophobia or hate crimes or anything like that but a lot of inner turmoil/conflicts that impact decisions and just lead to so much heartache.I cried a lot. But I’m also dealing with the emotions of losing a loved one recently so my emotions were all over the place to begin with. Tag I considered a SPOILER (so don’t read past here if you don’t want mild spoilers)🔴Long separation: at least 6-7 times I thought oh this is when they go their separate ways but nope. It’s actually a time skip that happens later. I wish I hadn’t known this and just read the story organically.🔴 There are a two side gay characters with some tragic stories- my heart hurt for them but it felt very real life.2025-goals asian-and-asian-inspired danmei-read ...more9 likes4 commentsLike CommentSamantha90 reviewsFollowFollowMarch 20, 20244.5 ⭐Sexy, violent and touching at the same time. I loved it!danmei5 likesLike CommentZoey449 reviews5 followersFollowFollowAugust 30, 2023I liked this series a lot. It was gritty and dramatic in the way I’d imagine gangsters to be like in the 90s. They were surprisingly honorable, but it was also an honor code fostered by the community, which meant it did not necessarily conform to societal standards of morality. That subjectivity made it more interesting. As for the main characters, Fang Yu and Yang Lei are very realistic and emotional characters, and I liked being able to watch them grow and mature over the years. Their dynamic and relationship was always complicated, but they were so stubborn and possessive that they managed to work out conflicts through sheer tenacity. (Spoilers in this paragraph) I also liked that it ended where it started. “Back then, they were still young. Back then, they walked to each other’s side.” It was a very simplistic line, but it was heartfelt. It was essentially saying that though they didn’t know how important they’d one day be to each other, they simply followed their hearts. They were young and wild, and there was nothing else to it.All in all, this was a good read. There were problematic parts, but considering that they’re all gangsters, it wasn’t particularly jarring or shocking. Story follows two gangsters renowned locally for their brawling ability AKA "gold class fighters"—rivals turned brothers who spend most of their time together. Because the story takes place during an era when not much was known about homosexuality, they spend a looong time straddling the line between brothers and lovers while having "no homo" sexual interactions. The story goes through phases of MC and ML's lives and I personally think it drags for a bit too long. Considering the gang setting, I also spent the whole time waiting for something terrible and angsty to happen. But this is a good one, recommended!Overall: 8/10Enjoyability: 5/5Would I reread? Probablydanmei3 likesLike CommentJess820 reviews41 followersFollowFollowDecember 8, 2024I don’t even know how to begin but I felt so much while reading this story. The characters were so well-written and full of life, and the plot progression and pacing were perfect. I wasn’t expecting much but once I started, I couldn’t stop reading. Yang Lei, Yang Lei (MC). YL has become one of my favourite danmei characters of all time. He left such a strong impression on me and I admired everything about him - his personality, how stubborn and determined he was, how he came to understand and accept his feelings for Fang Yu (ML), how he grew and matured over the years. He was such a character that brought life to the story that it was hard not to love him. FY is a close favourite because he has his own charms that helped to add dimension and depth to the story. He was a few years older than YL and felt responsible for him in a way, and he did his best to steer FY to the right direction, even at the expense of himself. I truly enjoyed reading about the development of their relationship - from rivals to friends to friends with benefits to lovers. It’s still an inadequate summary of their relationship because what YL and FY have is so much deeper and stronger than that. They went through so much with each other and for each other, both willing to die for the other. Their brotherhood forged in the gangdom was strong and unbreakable. Even when YL confessed his feelings towards FY, he did so not for the sake of hoping his feelings would be reciprocated but just because that was the kind of person he was. Even if FY didn’t feel the same way, YL didn’t want it to change their current relationship because he just loved being with FY. God, their bond is really something else. They were truly devoted to each other and the sacrifices they made for each other was so moving. The story was set in the 90s so there was the period-typical homophobia, which set the overall pace of YL and FY’s relationship development. The author did an excellent job with writing the confusion and helplessness that the characters felt due to their feelings for each other, which were considered taboo at the time. It was realistic and painful, and the yearning and separation between YL and FY were an exquisite flavour of angst. It made their coming together that much sweeter and fulfilling. Honestly I had to take a break from reading a few times because I was so overwhelmed and worried that it would be a BE but thankfully the author didn’t let me down. I freaking loved it when they finally got together, because after everything they went through and all that they suffered, the happiness they felt was everything they deserved. After all those years, their feelings for each other had not changed. It’s very much a slow burn and I was so glad that the author didn’t immediately end the story after YL and FY got together, because I wanted to read about them being happy together, their day to day lives together spent warmly. They found a home with each other and formed a family together. Even though they learned and understood the ways of the world and matured, with each other they could still be the same. So much happened in the story. There were so many ups and downs, fights and deaths, changes in the relationships between characters, that moved the story forward and there wasn’t a moment where I felt bored reading. Even the supporting characters like Hua Mao and Fang Mei added so much to the story, and I really liked how the author didn’t just treat them as chess pieces to move the narrative forward, but instead developed them and gave them their happy endings as well. Hua Mao in particular was a supporting character that I really liked because he was complex and reading about his backstory in the extras made me sad because he was a pure soul who got corrupted, so when the author introduced Gu Fei into his life, I was relieved because he really was so lonely. I was also vindicated when the bad guys got the endings they deserved, when rapists were killed and justice was served to those that messed with YL and FY’s people.favourites-20242 likesLike Commentsalted fish38 reviewsFollowFollowJuly 27, 2025This danmei novel was written years ago, and I was only seven years old at the time. A literal baby, lol. Even though the setting takes place way back, I was still able to understand and vividly visualize every scene thanks to the author’s brilliant writing. Growing up with my dad, who loves watching Hong Kong and Chinese action films and those classic "gangster" whatnots, I feel genuinely thankful. It helped me connect with the characters and understand their wild choices, intense emotions, and occasional drama. As I read, I laughed, cried, and even got mad at the characters. I honestly felt like I was part of their world. I absolutely adore the two main characters. And do not even get me started on my favorite side character, Hua Mao. My boiiii~~~! I was over the moon when the author gave him a few chapters. Though, if I am being honest, it still was not enough. I need more of him. I am also ridiculously happy that he got his own person huhuFive glowing stars for this masterpiece of a novel. It took me on an unforgettable rollercoaster of emotions and left me with a book hangover I never want to recover from.2 likesLike CommentMeghana114 reviews1 followerFollowFollowSeptember 13, 2024Now I’m pretty sure a lot was lost in translation, but this was one good book! After so long, I finally found a Danmei that pulled my heartstrings and it was worth everything the book put me through! This book reminded me of an Ari Aster film. He makes horror films that are known not to have any jump scares, but when one reviews a persons heart rate as they watch the film, it’s at a constant high from anxiety and adrenaline. This book had me clutching onto a rope that was half cut and did I enjoy that? Yes, I did!It was dark, poetic, dangerous, and very very entertaining. 2 likesLike Comment🫂💤5 reviewsFollowFollowJuly 8, 2025For some reason I thought it was a great idea to read this at the beach. well I had to restrain myself from having like 4 breakdowns cause I literally can’t handle emotional hurt/comfort 😭 Anyway a really great story with everything I need to have a good time reading a bit longer book • action • romance• and heartache cause what would be a danmei without unbearable angst 🗣️Recommend will read again ❗️2 likesLike CommentIndah26 reviews4 followersFollowFollowDecember 17, 2023I LOVE THIS STORY SO MUCH T.TTwo gold class fighters on the 80s who fell in love with each other?
